In order to fully enjoy Contact Improvisation and to undermine habits and patterns that have crept into our improvised movement sequences, we will consciously disorient ourselves in several ways in this course: First, we will do this very directly in our spatial orientation, changing external and internal perspectives. We will also question and at times even disregard knowledge and skills that we have laboriously acquired and trained, and discover and explore new aspects of our dancing. And we will also extend this to our typical role choices and behavior, provocatively questioning how much or how little we actually want or need to contribute to an improvisation, and when are we truly co-creating. All of this is sure to lead us to re-embody our own dance and open ourselves fully to contact, to refresh our improvisations from the ground up, and ultimately to surprise us again and again – by our partners and not least by ourselves.
