Contact improvisation has been a performative genre from the very beginning. Dancers observed and analyzed each other, thus learning from one another. However, over time, the practice increasingly lost its performative nature. But what exactly is this performative nature? For me, every jam is like a mini performance, as witnesses are also part of the dance. Within the framework of this workshop, I would like to move from internal observation to external expression. How does our dance change when we move in a highlighted space? How does our perception change with closed eyes versus open eyes? What is the significance of our gaze in our dance? And what is the significance of the gaze of others? How can we simultaneously connect with ourselves, our partner, and the space?

In the first half of the workshop, we explore these questions individually as well as in duos, trios, and group settings. In the second half, we open our attention to those observing us, examining how we can remain consciously present in our dance while others' gaze is upon us.

 The workshop is open to everyone, regardless of experience.

About the facilitator:

I'm a Hungarian contemporary artist, teacher, performer, director based in Lisbon. As a teacher I worked in a dancing specialized high school, and I held workshops in the Balkans, France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Dubai, Armenia, and Iran. My last 20 years in theatre helped me to travel the world, my last 15 years in contact improvisation helped me to understand it. Or to at least ask better questions...
