Where there is support, there one can release,

Where there is release, there one can flow.

Where things flow, there the play can start!

In this two-day workshop, we explore the fundamentals of Contact Improvisation and the role of playfulness in instant choreography. On the first day, our focus will be on physical principles such as finding the floor and grounding, listening the direction in the touch, exploring the dynamics between flyer and base roles, and sharing weight through various angles. We will also explore how direction emerges through points of contact and how movement spirals through space. Technical exploration will also include elements of contemporary dance floor-work, bio-mechanical availability work which can help us with transitions—moving from the floor to standing, into flight, and across the space. By somatic journeys we awaken our senses and playfully tap into the aliveness of the body.

The second day builds on these foundations by introducing instant choreographic elements into our improvisation. This layer invites new kinds of choices and creative directions during contact and how we can find joy of choice- making inside the dance.

At the heart of this workshop is the search for support—how and where it can be found, and how it enables both release and flow in improvisation. We will examine support in its many forms: within our own body, in relation to another body’s weight, as a choreographic task inside our mind and as a collective in shared space. Although we are constantly surrounded by support in daily life—through the ground, our own center, and our connections with others—we often remain unaware of it. This workshop aims to heighten that awareness, helping us feel how we are held by our environment so we can more fully trust, release, and move with flow.

Here the practice of Contact improvisation becomes a mirror to our inner space: moving in contact reveals how we relate to others, how we listen, how we make decisions, and how we hold ourselves. Through this lens, Contact Improvisation is not just a movement practice, but a tool for consciousness. As we shift from “knowing” to observing, we allow ourselves to be guided by the moment, without the need for a fixed narrative. In that state of not-knowing, connection and presence unfold.

The workshop is open to participants with prior experience in dance, movement, or Contact Improvisation.
