Within the frame of Salt Spring Contact Improvisation Summer Plunge,
we are excited to present the 4th annual Salt Spring Island Contact Improvisation Festival, from June 22th to June 26th 2019.

We will be coming together for a medley of Classes, Jams, Focused Jams, Group games, Scores, Indoor Dance, Outdoor exploration, Group Meals and Music. Join us for a 5 day immersive gathering where dance, community, art, nature and self discovery all meet in a space of investigation, a time of play.

FACILITATOR BIOGRAPHIES:

~~~~~~~Paul Singh~~~~~~~~

Paul Singh is a dancer that lives and works in New York City, USA. He earned his BFA degree in Dance from the University of Illinois, USA, where he focused on a variety of dance techniques including Alexander Technique, Ballet, Modern and Contact Improvisation. He began his studies in CI with Chris Aiken and since then has studied with Angela Dony, Yaniv Mintzer, Ray Chung and others. He has traveled the world to all the CI festivals in Israel, Russia, India, Spain, Germany, Finland, Canada, etc. He has led intensives at many of these contact gatherings as well as assisted others in teaching fundamentals of falling, flying, failing and laughing. As a student and teacher, he uses his understanding of Bartenieff Fundamentals as well as his innate sense of spatial awareness to explore more deeply the ideas of being grounded, becoming softer, and forgetting the difference between up and down.

He is currently on faculty at The Juilliard School, Sarah Lawrence College and Movement Research in NYC. He specializes in Contemporary Partnering, Floor Work and CI.

~~~~~~Martin Keogh~~~~~~~

Martin Keogh has been teaching and performing Contact Improvisation for nearly four decades. After attending the Interlochen Arts Academy and Stanford University, Martin spent time traveling to monasteries in Japan and Korea and was a dharma teacher and director of the Empty Gate Zen Center in Berkeley, California.

He is one of the original members of the Motivity Dance Company, which specializes in aerial dancing on low level trapezes. Martin founded The Dancing Ground, an organization that produces conferences on gender, race and mythology. He worked as consultant and teacher with Touchdown Dance USA, an organization that teaches C.I. to the blind.

For his contribution to the development of Contact Improvisation Martin is a Fulbright Senior Specialist and listed in Who’s Who in the World. He has taught in 31 countries on six continents. He is author of, Dancing Deeper Still: The Practice of Contact Improvisation, As Much Time as it Takes, and the anthology, Hope Beneath Our Feet: Restoring Our Place in the Natural World. Martin lives with his family by the Salish sea in British Columbia, Canada.

~~~~~~Isabelle Kirouac~~~~~~~

M.F.A in Interdisicplinary Arts and performance maker from Quebec, currently living in Vancouver BC, Isabelle Kirouac develop dances, installations and interdisciplinary performances that often integrate participatory interactions. Isabelle explores the senses, body awareness, intimacy, the notion of ritual, the concepts of home, migration and their reflection on our ways of seeing.

Manuel classes are a mix of deep embodiments, gradual skills and eclectic bodily interactions. His curiosity of the moment: Accessing polycentricity, how to increase availability & generosity with the body, falling together, continuity of movement, trios and group composition.His explorations in Contact Improvisation Dance led him to teachers such as Martin Keogh, Angelika Doniy, Karl Frost, Scott Wells, Vega Luukkonen, Kira Kirsch and more. Manuel is host of Salt Spring Island Contact Improvisation Dance Festival in Canada. He’s been holding space for CI gatherings and workshops for over 10 years. He is also a DJ and a gardener from which he source inspirations and metaphors.
