In the early part of the 21st century, our nervous systems are bombarded weekly with nearly as much information as earlier generations’ bodies would have had to process in their entire life-cycles. Algorithms promote and reward binary thinking.
Coming to a studio and dancing around, by ourselves and with other bodies, might seem a little weird considering everything else that is going on. Others might say it is the only sensible way to engage with our current reality(-ies). Or that it is an enormous privilege to be able to do so. All of this is true.
In this workshop, we will explore what it means to dance in the world, not as a form of escape, but as a bodily process of sense-making. We will dive into somatic explorations, grounding the nervous system, but also maintaining alertness. We will dance with the daily news, and slow down enough to process our own perception of the headlines, the words, the letters, the sounds. We will explore what, if any, generative power lives within the human body itself, in the space between bodies, and in the intentional act of touching one another.
This is not group therapy. I believe that one strategy for art to have an impact is to consciously reject offering “solutions” or “progress” – paradigms formulated by other, more goal-oriented fields – in favor of shifting perspectives, and the trickster impact of ambiguity and play
