More than a Single Being in the making of Emergent Composition: Contact Improvisation as Ensemble Form
Contact Improvisation holds in its ethos, physical practices that expand a dancer’s relational potential. Engaging as ensembles, as with CI duets, is a generative act that calls on our abilities to be greater than a single being. Through space and time practices that are somatic yet attentively organized, we will delve into the dynamics of co-creative encounters involving two or more dancers. These interactions are characterized by emergent properties, where the whole surpasses the sum of its parts, arising as a bottom-up phenomenon rather than a top-down, predetermined structure.
Central to our exploration is score building, a framework that guides and focuses our attentional orientations. Participants will engage with various forms of scores, bringing their own practices into registration within ensemble work. This process becomes a vessel for collaboration and discovery, fostering a dynamic interplay between personal creativity and collective emergence.
This workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced dancers who are ready to deepen their practice and engage with the spontaneous and transformative nature of ensemble-based emergent composition. Together, we will uncover new pathways for movement, connection, and shared creation. Come prepared to be an ensemble participant and a score builder, to work on the technical states that support creative practice and on the creative practices that allow ensembles generative freedom within constraints that support and unleash our physical/ relational imaginary.
