Practice and Poetics in Contact Improvisation - Nacionala Fondacija za Igru - Belgrade, Serbia

With excitement, we invite you to a unique workshop with Anjelica Doniy in Belgrade! Whether you’re new to contact improvisation or an experienced dancer, this is a chance to expand your knowledge and practice, explore authentic movement, and connect with the local community.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
This workshop explores the principles of movement in contact improvisation, focusing on both technical foundations and the poetry of dance. Together, we will uncover new ways of moving, connecting, and creating meaning through dance.

There are principles of movement in contact with a partner that serve as the practical basis of this discipline in every dance, for every dancer. Technical aspects related to the principles of movement in solo, with a partner and in a group, maintaining safety along with intuition.

And also, there is poetry, images, attraction to the creation of meanings, and compositional thinking.

I want to consider these aspects separately and give the dance a chance to draw on the whole palette of possibilities.

Practice
We will warm up in solo. This will be our learning of movements that point to understanding the ways the body works and how it can move efficiently and comfortably. We will study Bartenieff patterns and elements of contemporary dance techniques to expand the routes along which the body can move economically, clearly and competently.

Contact Improvisation
• We will practice CI composing in the space, time, and place.
• We will listen with the kinesphere, with the touch, vision, and heart.
• We will explore the Small Dance.
• We will study the exchange of weight, its flow, shifts, lowering, hanging.
• We will check the technical secrets of supports at different levels of dance, from the ground to the air.
• We will practice continuity, flow, spontaneity of movement in space.
• We will adapt the space behind the back to a spherical, connected, technically poetic dance.

Poetry of Dance
• Relaxing, releasing, fine-tuning techniques for the dance itself, such as bodywork, release technique, authentic movement.
• Images that affect the sensual side of the dance, activating imagination and creativity.
• Practice paying attention to the atmosphere in the room and the climate that we create by dancing with a partner or in a group.
• Working with attention, quality of listening, making the dance happen and lead the dancers. An invitation to pause and slowing down.
• Exploring the relationship between movement and vision.
• Soloing, contact with a partner and surrender to ensemble thinking.
• Jam as a space of creative emptiness, where technique turns into practice, and practice has access to poetry.

Questions of interest
What is visible, predictable, and teachable?
What is hidden, unpredictable, unlearnable?
Can jam be seen as an act of art in progress?
How does the witness influence the dancer? - How does the dancer influence the witness?

I like to create a place where life and dance meet, spirit and matter mix their qualities, and we begin to know what is not always available in words. As if we have one secret for all.
Take notebooks with you, we will write and maybe draw.

ABOUT ANJELICA
Anjelika Doniy is a dance improviser, choreographer, and teacher with over two decades of experience focused on contact improvisation. With formal studies in classical choreography, ballet and stage disciplines, she spent 10 years as a theater choreographer before discovering her true passion:

“In 1997, I saw a wonder of CI, watched Steve Paxton on stage, flew into Andrew Harwood workshop where some 70 dancers were rolling over each other. This was unbelievable, the earth was becoming alive. I saw a realization of my dream of the world growing from connection, interaction, harmony between one and many.”

Since 2002, she has been facilitating jams and workshops across the globe, inspiring dancers of all levels—from beginners to professionals.
“I love to guide people into the dance, inspire them with their own body, and awaken to what is already there. I love to surprise long-time dancers with secrets of the body as little keys opening a familiar dance into new spaces.

My special interest in contact improvisation is clarity. Clarity towards the practice. Honesty towards how I move my weight in the space of Gravity. Attention towards clearing the dance from the personal. Letting things happen as they go.

I am grateful to have met and studied with such teachers as Regine Chopinot, Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith, Danny Lepkoff, Benno Voorham, Lisa Nelson, Esther Gal, Yaniv Mintzer, Martin Keo, and many others.”

With over 200 workshops taught worldwide, many years of work in acquiring and transmitting technical skills, and an equally long path of meditation and mindfulness practice, Anjelika blends her knowledge into this life dance, contact improvisation.
