Un weekend dedicato alla pratica e allo studio dello Score di Nancy Stark Smith per immergersi nell’improvvisazione di gruppo dove Composizione e Contact Improvisation si fondano, si supportano portando focus, attenzione e consapevolezza. Non mancheranno momenti dedicati alla tecnica.

Ma di cosa si tratta?
L’Underscore è una modalità per la pratica e la ricerca dell’improvvisazione nella danza che Nancy Stark Smith ha sviluppato a partire dal 1990 in parallelo con la Contact Improvisation. Si tratta di uno score aperto che guida i danzatori attraverso una seria di “cambiamenti di stato”, da momenti di assolo dedicati al release, alla sensibilizzazione alla gravità e al supporto che essa offre; attraverso interazioni di gruppo, danze di contact improvisation, si apre la possibilità di immergersi in improvvisazioni caratterizzate da consapevolezza compositiva.

Il Global Underscore è praticato tutti gli anni simultaneamente a livello globale in concomitanza con il solstizio estivo. È stato proposto per la prima volta da Clair Filmon nel 2000 seguendo il desiderio di connettere danzatori da tutto il mondo per poter creare e comporre tutti insieme nel momento presente.

Danzatrice, performer, insegnante, ricercatrice e linguista, incontra la Contact Improvisation in Australia dove inizia a studiare e praticare questa forma di danza che - come per molti altri - le ha cambiato la vita. La continua ricerca e il desiderio di approfondire ulteriormente, la portano nel 2009 a intraprendere un anno sabbatico dedicato allo studio della CI. EarthDance è stato naturalmente scelto come punto di partenza, dove ha partecipato alle tre settimane di intensivo con Nancy Stark Smith. Da allora, gli incontri con la cosiddetta “madrina della CI” sono avvenuti in diverse occasioni: nell'estate del 2009, interprete per il gruppo italiano durante l’intensivo a Budapest; nel 2011, invitata da Nancy per un periodo di ricerca di due settimane presso la Roehampton University di Londra per l'Extended Underscore Research Group; nel 2016 ha incontrato nuovamente Nancy a Berlino per l'ultimo Global Underscore da lei facilitato in Europa, dove ha documentato l'introduzione dell'ultimo glifo introdotto nell'Underscore; nel 2017 è stata invitata a partecipare come Project Manager per il Global Calendar. Dal 2009 facilita l'Underscore e il Global Underscore sia in Italia che a livello internazionale. Nel 2022 ha unito un collettivo informale di danzatrici che hanno studiato con Nancy per approfondire il lavoro oltre all’Underscore, culminato nel Nancy Celebration Lab.

L'incontro con Nancy è stato fondamentale, di grande ispirazione, in modi inaspettati e profondi.

Al momento la sua ricerca riguarda l’integrazione fra la Contact Improvisation e il Sistema di Analisi di Movimento Laban Bartenieff, di cui sta completando gli studi, passando sempre per l’Underscore.

A weekend dedicated to the practice and the study of Nancy Stark Smith’s Score to delve into group improvisation where Composition and Contact Improvisation are fused, supporting each other in bringing focus, attention and awareness. There won’t shortage of moments dedicated to technique.

But what is it about?

The Underscore is a framework for practicing and researching dance improvisation that Nancy Stark Smith has been developing since 1990 based on her work with Contact Improvisation. It is an open score that guides dancers through a series of “changing states”, from solo deepening/releasing and sensitizing to gravity and support; through group circulation and interaction, contact improvisation engagements, opening out to full space improvisation with compositional awareness.

The Global Underscore is practiced globally and simultaneously every year for the Summer Solstice. It was proposed, for the first time, by Clair Filmon in 2000, following her desire to connect dancers from all over the world to create and compose all together in the present moment.

Dancer, performer, teacher, researcher and linguist, she meets Contact Improvisation in Australia where she starts studying and practicing this dance form that – as for many others – has changed her life. The continuous research and wish to delve deeper into it, in 2009 led her to undertake a sabbatical dedicated to the study of CI. EarthDance was naturally chosen as the starting point where she took part in Nancy Stark Smith’s three weeks intensives. Since then, the meetings with the so-called “CI God-Mother” happened on different occasions: in the summer of 2009 at the pre-festival workshop in Budapest where she was the interpreter for the Italian group; in 2011 she was invited by Nancy for a research period of two weeks on her lifework at the Roehampton University in London for the Extend Underscore Research Group; in 2016 she met Nancy again in Berlin for the last Global Underscore facilitated by Nancy in Europe, where she documented the introduction of the last glyph introduced to the Underscore; in 2017 she was invited to participate as Project Manager for the Global Calendar. Since 2009 she has been facilitating the Underscore and the Global Underscore both in Italy and internationally. In 2022, she created an informal collective of dancers who studied with Nancy, to further study her work beyond the Underscore, culminated in Nancy Celebration Lab.
Meeting Nancy has been crucial, of great inspiration, in unexpected and profound ways. 

Currently, her research is focused on the integration between Contact Improvisation and Laban Bartenieff Movement Analysis, in which she is completing her studies, always passing through the Underscore.
