Contact Improvisation class

In this contact improvisation class, we will explore our physicality, gravity, balance, and imbalance, either in pairs or in groups. We will play with lifts, momentum, falls, and rebounds, and let movement unfold in 360°.

This is not about reproducing figures, but about letting the body play, experiment, and learn—sharing weight, cooperating, and opening up to a living and ever-changing context.

The practice invites a double movement. On one hand, letting ourselves be traversed by forces larger than ourselves – gravity, the dynamics of a fall, the shared momentum of a duo or group. On the other hand, actively participating in these forces. We do not simply endure them; we enter into a dialogue with them, guiding and modulating them. This is an active letting-go, where surrender is not passivity, but availability, listening, and dialogue with what arises. It opens the way to improvisation and co-creation.

This practice also cultivates attention to what is woven between us: a non-verbal communication, sensitive to subtle variations of tone, and to the expressions of our impulses, resources, and limits.

It values subjective experience and offers the opportunity to expand our field of presence, even in moments of imbalance, stress, or when our bearings waver. Through the practice, we gradually develop internal supports that allow us to take pleasure in inhabiting these moving spaces and letting ourselves be carried by flows.

While contact improvisation remains above all a dance, it also resonates with the way we inhabit the world – a world that is unstable, rapidly transforming, and with an uncertain future. This practice does not offer a remedy, but it provides a space to learn to stay connected, find resources together, and invent forms of cooperation and joy in the midst of uncertainty.

Class progression

The class is designed for the entire academic year and is therefore particularly suited to those able to commit to regular participation.

To meet the needs for engagement and intensity in learning, beginners wishing to join are welcome only at the start of the academic year: every Wednesday in September and October. From November onward, the group will remain open only to drop-in participants with prior contact improvisation experience.

Where? Gymnase Breguet – Dance Studio, 2nd floor – 27 rue Breguet, 75011 Paris

When? Every Wednesday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, from early September to the end of June, no reservation required. (Note: classes may not take place during school holidays; the contact improvisation schedule is updated in such cases.)

Note : Just before, in the same room, the “hypnose à bouger” workshop runs from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM; and afterwards, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the “atelier du mouvement” takes place. You are of course welcome to join!

Cost: €16 per class, or €110 for a 10-class pass (usable in other workshops offered by Catherine Kych in Paris & Périgord) + association membership (online).

How? No registration needed. Just come on the day, 15 minutes early.
